la rondine
New production for the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. 4 performances in May 2014 at the Atheneum Theatre in Glasgow. Our production transposed the setting of the opera to the 1930‘s, as a work which arguably pre-empts the modern era. Act 1 was relocated to the dressing rooms of the Grand Guignol Theatre in Paris, where Magda and other characters were members of a performing company under the ‘protection’ of Rambaldo’s mafia. The ‘theatrical’ conceit progressed to Bullier’s Dance Hall in Act 2 where characters explored, through disguise and dressing up, new freedoms and love. The last act developed a Magritte-inspired migration to the South of France and hinted at the changing paths for women in modern society, the devastation of shattered dreams, abandoned love and impending war. Designers were Giuseppe and Emma Belli.
